the USUAL SUSPECTS -> ROMNEY and the rest of the "1% GANG!!!"

Individual NET WORTH of our leader and the rest of the wannabe's

Advertise | AdChoices

Folks, I'm sick of it… sick of not getting the "representation" I feel and believe our country needs and deserves.  Recently, I've been looking into the wealth of our leaders and representatives.  Did you know that over half of congress are millionaires?  Did you also know that over the past several years while the economy was in the tank and the average household income was going down, the folks in Washington were getting richer?  Amazing!  Aside from being human, what do I have in common with these folks?  Are their daily struggles the same as mine or that of the average jane and joe in America?

Why is it that our leaders have to be rich, to be in the 1%, to be president of the United States?  Easy answer, I guess, although I do not like it, but it is obvious… they are the only one's that can finance a campaign.  They also get plenty of help from all their friends living in the "1% world!"  I suppose when they get into office, they forget about all those folks who helped pay for their campaigns and focus on the little guy… right?  Then why are they getting richer and we are getting poorer?  Why is it that the big banks were getting bailouts while the folks in the "real world" were losing jobs?  Why were the CEO's of these banks getting bonuses?  Are you beginning to see a pattern here?

The reason I have listed net worth over income is because apparently net worth is the "more accurate" figure when estimating someone's wealth.  Net worth is the sum of one's assets -> home equity, investments, savings, retirement, cars (paid off), furnishings and such things as jewelry, furs, wine collection, old baseball cards (all paid off)  -> MINUS all outstanding liabilities such as mortgage balance, credit card debt, college loans, auto loans and so on.  Below you will see the U.S. individual median net worth broken down by percentiles.  The figures are unbelievably lopsided in favor of the upper echelon… and what is utterly amazing is they are only getting richer, while everyone else… the 99%, are getting poorer.

$$$ NET WORTH $$$:

Net worth (percentile)
Median net worth (rounded)

Level VI (90 to 100)
$833,600

Level V (80 to 89.9)
$263,100

Level IV (60 to 79.9)
$141,500

Level III (40 to 59.9)
$62,500

Level II (20 to 39.9)
$37,200

Level I (less than 20)
$7,900

Here's the image again for effect… I don't want you to forget these numbers! :)

Look at level VI up there under net worth.  Interesting, but not a single person running for president falls less than that figure.  These folks have individual net worths out of the ball park!  It just blows my mind!

I can't even begin to fathom what it must be like to walk in their shoes.  I wonder if they understand what it feels like to walk in my shoes, or your shoes?  I wonder if they understand what it's like to walk in the shoes of your neighbor who lost their job, or the family down the street who lost their home?  I wonder if they understand what it's like to walk in the shoes of those just living from paycheck to paycheck… or the family that just lost their retirement or savings?  I wonder if they know today what it's like to walk in the shoes of the homeless and hungry?

I wonder…

I think Rick Perry is either praying for more "net worth" or maybe that his hair looks good and that he was a little taller… maybe! :)

This is nothing new, it has been the case forever. What do you suggest is the solution?

Additionally there are different avenues for reaching one's position in life. Someone born to a modest or even poor financial situation that struggles and endures to educate him or herself and ultimately through knowledge and hard work becomes successful, may have more in common with the majority of America than someone born into vast wealth passed on through inheritance.

Ultimately it is character that determines ones contribution in life, wealth can facilitate those with a passion to serve his fellow man - it does not always exclude everyone that achieves financial success from understanding the plight of others and wanting to improve society for all.

By being "nothing new" does not make it right. I'm open to ideas for solutions… it's why I wrote the article. Thanks for your comments and you are very right, one's path to "success" might be what forms their character and makes them an ideal leader. For some reason, and I could be wrong here, I'm not getting that "vibe" from our current crop.

I'm not getting that "vibe" from our current crop.

I agree that the current crop of GOP hopefuls have little in common with the 99%. I do feel Obama is genuinely more sympathetic to the poor and middle class but I am a progressive afterall.

I agree with Fla Pat moby, your analysis is simplistic. I would REMIND you that two of the GREATEST progressive presidents on domestic social issues were the Roosevelts, Teddy and Franklin. And those below the million dollar mark range from Lincoln and Truman to Buchanan and Coolidge, see this - http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2010/05/the-net-worth-of-the-us-presidents-from-washington-to-obama/57020/#slide43

What COUNTS is policies and political positions. I would vote for an FDR any day of the week for ANY political position before I'd EVER vote for a Coolidge, because FDR and I would have AGREED on what public policy should be and Coolidge and I never EVER would.

Thanks for your comments and yes, my approach is too simplistic. Maybe, at least for me, I can bring ideas to the surface when I start off simple and then comments like yours and Fla Pat are posted, and then I start to grow and understand a little better.

I guess my concern is the incredibly wealthy are losing touch with reality… our reality, especially in todays environment where special interest groups and folks with "big money" are getting our representatives elected and then lobbying them when they're in office. I'm worried that even those politicians with the best and greatest ideas lose track of why they were elected in the first place. Money can be a great motivator.

Also, I don't remember any of our leaders having any great affinity for the "Occupy" movement… just an observation that bothered me.

It is not what is in their bank accounts that I base my feelings on. It is what I believe is in their brain, heart, and soul, gets my vote.

I hear you… very true. Still amazed at the wealth disparity between the folks in the street and those in Washington.

I also feel "sold out" and betrayed by Obama. I really believed in him back in 2007, when I voted for him, that he was finally someone who genuinely cared about the average guy. I felt a connection with him that I hadn't ever experienced with another political figure. He has let us down… let me down.

I am wishing you renewed hope in the path that the President has been forced to tread by the recalcitrant repubs, Moby. I know I will continue to support the President and not fear the future. Progress is slow in righting the direction we need to go to regain fairness and prosperity for all Americans. There are more of us (the 99%). We will prevail.

Nice article Moby

I must say I truly hate politics, truly. I get so frustrated when politics comes up, and the rule at our house is NO POLITICS. My wife center to left, and I am center to right. I hate the extremes on either side, of course that being said I might seem extreme to someone on the other side of an issue of me. I just try to be practical and honest. This is what I see are a couple problems. For the sake of argument I am going to say "Politicians" meaning all, (Libertarian, Republican, Democrat) and I very much feel they are all the same.

Attention span- We all have a very limited attention span. We get excited about this and that, then it fades away. I want a POTUS that cares about me, oops he doesn't? Oh well I will put him back in anyway. If the nice car dealer down the street screws you, do you go back to that dealership? I bet you at least complain to him, do you tell your representative when you are mad at them or the POTUS?

Business Model- I look at politicians, and the whole establishment as a well oiled business machine. Like in business, they have honed to perfection, what turns us on and off. Like business, they do what they have to, to stay in it. Like business they lose connection to us. The issues of the time are like new toys on the market. If they are hot, everybody makes a version of it, if they flop they distance their selves from it. The politicians are like CEO's (most CEO's), they are built to do one thing, make their pockets bigger, secure their position. They are not in it for anyone else, which basically is in our nature just some take it to a new level, they just say or do what is necessary to get what they need to step up to the next level.

Money- Yes it makes the world go around. You have to have money for everything. Ok, Love is free...right? That's a whole other debate. This is the key to which I believe the point you were making. They may have come about it in many different ways, but it is there all the same. Does having bunches of money make you an evil person? No. Does money make you lose grip with the world? Yes. My thought as to why, is once you stop worrying about one thing, then many more "things" arise to which you forget what was the first thing. Think about that. If you are broke, and I mean really broke, the raman noodles, hide from the landlord, don't answer the phone type of broke. You find all kinds of ways to support yourself or family during that time, you are even thankful to your neighbor, you will eat off of a dirty plate so to speak and not care. Now fast forward a couple of years; past that job promotion, past those raises, past your spouses raises, past a good round of great luck, will you still eat off that dirty plate? Will you remember who picked you up? Will you socialize with that dirty family across town (where you once lived) that invited you in for a meal? Let's say you move up the corporate ladder; do you remember the guys on the dock, mail room, cubicle, or break room? Really? Or do you smoke cigars (metaphor) in the club and cost cut to add more work to those people you left behind because you fired a few thousand? Hey the choice is yours, lose your job or lose someone elses. Now take all the business words out and insert political ones instead. It is the same thing. I am sorry but when I hear people say this president or that one really cares about me... don't buy it. They will smile at you, they will shake your hand, and kiss your baby, but they don't care. WAIT, wait a minute I will concur, they may care somewhere down deep in that lump of coal, but will they do something about it? Nope. One thing I bet they do, is tell you why they can't do it. ALWAYS, someone else's fault.

Sorry Moby for the rant, but as you said it sparks more comments.

Hi Cat,

I said this before and I'll say it again, the US is becoming another Mexico. The gap between the highest salaries and the lower salaries is becoming wider and wider.
