Call it a feeling, or just instinct or whatever… but if Mitt Romney gets the nod from the GOP establishment this year, he will be absolutely destroyed by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton… oops, I meant Vice President Biden.  Anyway, did you see today where Mitt Romney only pays a tax rate of around 15% on his millions of earnings each year from "past" investments… or rather, corporate raiding.

Romney also considers his income made from speech opportunities to be small potatoes… loose change not really worth mentioning.  That amount was around $374,000 in 2011.  Holy $hit was my first thought… jaw dropped with eyes wide open, this guy REALLY HAS NO IDEA what it's like to be in the 99%… no idea.

DOES THIS PICTURE BOTHER ANYBODY ELSE, OR IS IT JUST ME THAT THE GUY IN THE MIDDLE WANTS TO BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT? :/

I'm in the top 10% of income earners (much less than Romney's "loose change"), and I promise you that my accountant finds every possible deduction, loophole and so on… he squeezes the IRS like Arnold Schwarzenegger squeezing a wet rag, but I always end up paying at least 30% in federal income taxes.

Everyone who reads my column knows I'm leaning towards Ron Paul, but I'm beginning to wonder how he sizes up with Romney when it comes to paying taxes and understanding the little guy.  I don't know anymore.

Anyway, I'd like you opinion about Mitt Romney.  What do you think about Mitt Romney, his 15% tax rate, his ability to run America like a "business", and his chances going toe to toe with President Obama.  Newsvine CoH in effect, as usual!  :)

These Republican clowns that are campaigning for the Republican nononation for President are showing just how stupid Politicians have become in today realtime world. Dumb!!!

Obama will win easily in 2012. Romney will continue to keep his tax returns secret. We can count if he gets the nod by the GOP, his excuse for not showing his tax returns will be since Obama is not showing his college transcripts, and other erroneously requested documents, that Romney will not show his tax returns. This is going to back fire on Romney and with the perceived facts of being a job destroyer (which he will try to counter with Obamas jobs record note: Congress is sitting with an 84 percent disapproval record, so much of the job blame will lean on congress not the president), Romney will loose in 2012

Claiming to be an outsider of DC is a lie his father was a politician his draft deferment politically achieved, his position with Bain Capital politically influenced with both insider information, and politically involved investors(EK Congressman, Senators). Governor of Mass.

Romney`s chances of winning in 2012 is zero, though I would not stay home and not vote in November.

    Moby,

Only one of your poll questions was anything close to being properly phrased. Your question regarding Governor Romney's tax rate shows a lack of understanding of Capital Gains taxes and other basic economic principles. If you wish to talk about fairness issues in taxation, then I would assume you would be for a flat tax on all income and everyone pays the same rate, correct?

    Regards,

    Mike

Does it really matter? I mean seriously, does it really matter how much I understand capital gains, blah, blah, blah? What is Romney's bottom line for paying income taxes… 15%? That's a joke! I'm an independent contractor and run a small business and can honestly tell you Mitt Romney does not represent me and the majority of Americans.

IMHO a flat tax is the WORST scenario. It simply means a % and the poor amongst us would be hit the hardest per disposable income. The flat tax is a Norquist joke being masqueraded as a real deal. The progressive tax rates we have, probably need to be tweaked (ie 15% on money YOU didn't work for) to reflect current conditions, but really do represent the fairest way to tax ALL Americans.

      SW -

More then three years and you keep making excuses for Obama and his many other foot in mouth comments. So lets look at some of the more recent examples of his oratory, uber educated skills:

Sept. 2011: "We’re the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad," Barack Obama.

Sept 2011: Obama told a joint session of Congress, and the American people, that Abraham Lincoln founded the Republican Party.

Feb 04, 2010 · The way Obama supports the men and women in the military he is turning Medics into Corpse Men ! (it's Corpsmen)

Jul 18, 2008: "Throughout our history, America's confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world."

Obama speaking to a question from an Austrian reporter at the 2009 G-20 Meeting:

Obama said his debut on the international stage had convinced him that "political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate," where he served before entering the White House. "There’s a lot of -- I don’t know what the term is in Austrian -- wheeling and dealing, and people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics..."

Obama said that his uncle "was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz." It was the Soviets who liberated Auschwitz.

And the examples of his legendary silver tounged PR flubs go on and on. If the number of PR flubs are what you are basing your election choices then Mitt has the election in the bag.

Every politician makes gaffes, AD. Some of Obama's have been severely damaging, others not so much. I wasn't criticizing gaffes in general terms. I was pointing out that Mitt Romney has made a lot of statements lately that point to him being rich and privileged, and that's not going to help his public image.

The problem is, in Mitt's case, it's not a gaffe. It's just the honest truth. He is rich and privileged, and when he lets pesky facts out like his 15% income tax, it just helps to illustrate that point. I'm talking about building his image as a rich man in an economy that doesn't favor rich men, as part of a collective whole. That's a far cry from various verbal flubs over the course of three years.

Yes Mitt openly admits to being rich and privileged. Obamais equally rich and privileged. (and not I am not comparing who has the bigger bank account...from where I sit, and mostly likely you as well...makes little difference if their assessed wealth is "only" 5 million or 50 million - both men are rich! Obama may have started out small potatoes but along the way he has developed an impressive net worth since his days as an ACORN Organizer.

My feeling is if you find fault with one for openly admitting he is rich you should also be mad about the one who is rich but trys to convince the American voters he's "the common man."(There is nothing "common man" about a single vacation costing $4 million...at least not in my book.)

          #5.5 - Thu Jan 19, 2012 11:15 PM EST
          Steve Watts

That's why I talked about it in terms of a PR problem, AD. Obama is well-off, but his campaign has done a good job of making him appear more-or-less like a regular guy. Approachable. The kind of guy you could just sit and have a talk with.

Romney's campaign has done a pretty terrible job of the same goal. Something about his personality just exudes wealth, no matter how many times he takes off his tie or rolls up his sleeves. On top of that, you have him telling anecdotes about meeting with his financial advisor or paying 15% of income taxes. His statements are adding to the already problematic vision of him as an out-of-touch rich guy.

That's why I was confused by your counter-argument. I wasn't talking about silly flubs and gaffes, I was talking about public image. Obama's public image is pretty likable. Romney's is less so. He needs to solve that problem and stop adding to it if he wants to have a prayer against Obama, because voters these days tend to cast their ballot for the guy they want to have a beer with.

Maybe that's not fair, but it's the political reality of our day. In an economic climate where even your fellow Republicans are criticizing you for being rich hoping it will score them some points, that's a serious detriment to his electoral hopes.

We still have a LONG horse race ahead of us before Nov. 4th. A lot can happen in either camp. If nothing else, American voters can be counted on as having short term memories.

that is starting to turn around Vlad. The people that are getting exploited by low wages (Chinese, Indians, etc) are starting to realize what is going on and starting to get vocal about it.

It appears the only people getting rich (sickeningly rich in comparison) are the people that are the employers. Imagine that.

if the economy tanks.....sure....then he will be replaced...but my guess is...the economy will be about the same.

there is only one way Romney will win. ONE THING he could do to win....and I dont think he will do it.

If one "projects" to the actual election, it is most likely Obama will win the election. Democrats aren't really interested in polls at this time. They will be very interested in voting come election time. Sadly for the republicans, they have alienated nearly everyone in the Country except those that are white, wealthy and naive.

The only cowards seen are those too chicken @!$%# to do what is best for the Country and not what their sheep herders demand.

Memo to you: others are allowed to have opinions, too. Only a fascist would scream so painfully about opposing opinions.

Nope. I don't have a translator for that.

I know five of the posters here and I don't think any of us venture into the MSNBC threads. I wonder why you and CC jump out and assume it's all about love for Obama instead of the fact that he IS the dem candidate and Mitt is the frontrunner. Get hold of yourselves.

It's not about loving Obama and if you read my column, you will see I'm not at all happy with him. I favor Ron Paul and honestly believe he is the only one that would give Obama a run for his money. Romney is despicable and would, at least in my opinion, get destroyed by Obama.

I wasn't referring to you Moby. It's seems to be if you are against Romney, Perry, Tom, Dick or Harry, you must be an Obama supporter, therefore an MSNBC fan and hence an idiot. So, ten more months of this. I guess I jumped onto the wrong thread. I am against Romney for a host of reasons and I do support Obama in spite of many issues I have. I'm just not prepared for the fighting. Sorry if I offended you.

Just a negative talking point that suppose to have a Negative connotation about someone generally spoken by someone who may have been brain washed to believe this crap.

I love President Obama and I will be voting for him because I like most of his policies. I Do Not like these Republicans Candidates policies and in some cases lack of policies. They are just repeated policies many of the same policies that got us into this mess. I don't need MSNBC, Fox, NBC, ABC, and all the other alphabet stations to think for me. All I've got to do is use my God Given Senses and Look, Listen, Think (Fact Check). It doesn't take me long to come to the conclusion of Hell Hell No! I do not any of these Republican Candidates to be my President.

what is Obama's TRUE rate of taxes paid....Hard to compare Mitt's 15% when you can't other millionaire rates.

Here you go, and Obama obviously has a better accountant than you.

According to the First Family’s 2010 tax return [2], the Obamas paid in excess of $450,000 in federal taxes—more than the President’s $400,000 salary. Much of the family’s income is from book sales, which slowed over the past year, causing their income to dip from $5.5 million in 2009 to $1.7 million last year. As the New York Times notes [3], the Obamas had a tax rate of just over 26 percent.

26%...sounds like Obama needs to borrow Romeny's tax loop hole specialist. By the way...if you look at teh Tax rates posted by the IRS Romeny AND Obama as well as most memebrs of Congress who pay any of their federal taxes are paying well under the 35% tax rate posted for people making over $350.00

Why start a war, sacrifice American lives and billions of dollars when we can send in a 1) laser guided cruise missile or 2) highly trained and tested special ops to "clean up" the mess? Obama did very well in this area.

That is the point really. Why do I have to pay 30% in taxes on hard earned income that is merely fractions of what Romney earns but only pays 15% on? The picture is upside down.

And if it is a jobs creation thing I do not think a tax break that size is justified to employ one more accountant... seriously!!

                        America 2012: a short story-

                        Obama wins,

after a couple years of tough sanctions,

                        we invade Iran,

                        a bloody war ensues,

Muslims, Christians and Jews beging wiping each other out,

terrorism begins on American streets, a nuke is set off in LA,

killing most entertainment personalities. We are devastated.

Massive protests begin, the masses demand that their favorite TV shows come back on air.

Martial law is declared to advert the impending "Entertainment Crisis".

                        Obama is declared:

                        "President for life,

                        The ruler of all things

that walk, crawl and swim, and actor of all shows!"

The emergency government begins emergency production

of several different shows, from variety to action, all staring:

"Obama, President for life, ruler of all things that walk, crawl and swim

                        and actor of all shows!"

Obama is not such a good actor, the masses become restless.

"Entertain Us! Entertain us!" Yell the millions of bored protestors across the nation.

Eventually local governments begin to crumble,

                        multi national corporations hire

                        "mercenary death squads"

                        to protect their interests and

                        provide order on American streets.

Civil wars ensue between all factions,

                        chaos, pain, and unbelievable suffering

                        spread throughout the entire country,

like a fire, a very hot fire, that burns, "ouch".

                        Rednecks run rampant combing desolate

city centers relentlessly searching for MT. Dew and generic cigarettes,

the wealthy hire "kidnap squads" to kidnap children

so they may eat their internal organs (which now have become a delicacy).

The counter revolution takes hold, led by a skinny old man, Ron Paul.

After several assassination attempts, Mr. Paul was forced to live in a secret bunker,

after 6 long years, he grew a rather long beard, and wore only a potato sack.

This sack was rather short so Mr. Paul was incidentally "hanging brain"

as he reappeared from his secret hideout.

By now, nuclear war has left most of the world desolate, only sporadic

nomadic groups are left, fighting for what little nourishment they find.

Mr. Paul staggers down the mountain side, hair array, face dirty, brain hanging.

He is holding to large stones, in which, he patiently carved the US constitution

with his fingernails while hiding in the mountainous caves.

The sun is rising as Mr. Paul makes his way to a small group of disheveled scavengers.

He holds the stones up, and the group of people slowly raise their heads towards Mr. Paul,

Mr. Paul yells to the group, "This is the law! Mankind will assemble himself according to what is carved in these stones!"

The group falls to their knees, and begin praising the hairy, soot covered man.

"He was sent from god! He is a prophet!" One of the men yelled.

"Follow me!" Mr. Paul yelled, "I need to go get some pants."

                        THE END>

Mr. Paul staggers down the mountain side, hair array, face dirty, brain hanging.

He is holding to large stones, in which, he patiently carved the US constitution

with his fingernails while hiding in the mountainous caves.

That's *Dr. Paul* and you forgot the part where he has spent the last 6 years delivering "Freedom Babies" up in the mountains.

                        Romney is absolutely clueless.

I think Obama will win, but, it won't be a walk in the park. Obama is a moderate republican running under the guise of a democrat.

Most of us who voted for his "hope" and "change" will probably, with heavy hand, vote for him again but more because a devil you know is better than a devil you don't know.

Obama has definitely been a disappointment, but is ultimately better than wealth and power bought and paid for by wealth, power and the dodo @!$%# crazy TParty.

I disagree w/ your Obama assessment. While I am disapointed w/ some action - the detention sh!T for one; overall Obama has had a good, clean run. Whenever progressives speak w/ the disdain I feel from your post, I have to wonder, is he really reflecting against Obama or the congress and Blue Dogs that rode in on his coattails and refused to suport him - ie Ben Nelson or Heath Shuler etc.

Why is it that progressive deride the over reach of the conservative lot of idiots currently in place, but feel that their ideas should just waltz thru? I really don't get it. And progressives that continue that line of thought may do more harm than good.

Obama has definitely been a disappointment,

Only if you had unrealistic hopes. Obama had to twist a pendulum that's been shoved rightward far against the grain of the public's beliefs. He's accomplished more in his 3 years than most Presidents manage in 8.

And most of what he does is for the long game. The short-term, gotcha-style mentality of politics (that has largely been ingrained on us by quick-draw-mcgraw style Republicans eager to get in, @!$%# @!$%# up, and get out fast), is not how Obama works.

Look to the long game. Obama is by far the most Progressive president we've had in a lifetime. He's just not very loud about advertising it, because he is trying not to spook the remains of the Confederacy.

I think he's done a BANG-UP job, and I will enthusiastically support him in November. Actually, I plan on knocking on doors in August and September.

This election is probably the most important one of my lifetime. This election is where we cast off the shell of the 20th century and find out if we're ready for the 21st. So many things have changed, and we have got to pull the levers of power out of the hands of folks who have no clue what we're getting into. Obama does.

Obama promised more than anyone could ever deliver considering the economic environment in 2008… he just promised too much to get elected and disappointed a lot of folks.

Excellent article and poll Moby's ManCave. Romney in the White House is a scary concept - and that's what it will stay - a concept. He will say and do anything to get to an end. He would be a foreign policy nightmare and terrorize the economy into a standstill. At least with Obama it is moving: real jobs are being created.

Even a Fox News channel can't deny the truth.

Why rock a boat already set on a steady course?

I get that Marshall. I just don't want to live in a world where I have to sue people to have my basics taken care of. That isn't a solution for me. Ron Paul scares me more than Romeny.

that is because you are afraid of freedom.....and the responsibility it brings...you have let the propaganda convince you that authoritarianism is a good thing...that independence is bad...that dependence is good.

they want you to be a child your whole life......dont be....stand up to the corporations and the elite and tell them...you do not want laws which supposedly help you but by some miracle always seem to help corporations.

stand up and tell them you will take care of your family...no matter what......that there is no stronger bond than that of a family and community. That no nanny state is going to replace your desire to be a free man/woman who has the right to make good and bad choices in their life.

that you are willing to help others.......to help them be independent.....

we are the only ones who can fix this....THE ONLY ONES.

government cant do it...the corporations cant do it.

only we can fix this by rejecting both and accepting FREEDOM.

                              PEACE.

No Marshall - I merely prefer an enlightened society. Oh - and I'm sort of centrist when it comes to the military. As in - I'm not a pacifist. But I am an OWS supporter - one of the 99%. I want the system to work for all of us: I don't want to chuck the system. I want them to own up to how they've let this country down: I want jail time. Ron Paul will give them all a pass.

that is why they are throwing their money at him right???? wrong??? hmmmmmmmmm

so by not supporting the bailout which rewarded the rich in this country and victiimized the poor...he is against the poor and for the rich????????????

                              I LIKE YOUR THINKING!!!!!

obama hurts the poor..helps the rich...he is for the poor.

up is down, left is right......hey I am starting to like this!!!!!!!

I must say you do not know what you are talking about. Ron Paul believes people should pay for bad actions...and crimes against others....that is why lobbyists dont bother with him...and that is why corporations dont bother him.

here is something a progressive said about him.. enjoy.

Kucinich says: "I've worked with Ron Paul and I know he cannot be bought, cannot be bossed around, keeps his own counsel and is a person of conscience.

never once has he ever said that individuals or companies have the right to kill you or violate your body/property without recourse.

If he has said such thing....please link. and I will apologize.

but obamas actions said that very thing.....they raped the poor and middle class of this country...failed as companies...and his message...as it has been for decades....was...oh its ok...here is some more money from the poor and middle class.....wink wink....and just so they dont get too upset...we will tell them....this is for their own good.

that always works....it has for the last 100 years.

You mean sue after the fact - not good enough.

And I have to ask - isn't the fact that Ron Paul is running as a Republican tell you something?

Here's his list of top donors:

                              US Army$78,056

                              Northrop Grumman$16,907

                              JPMorgan Chase & Co$16,072

A self-proclaimed anti-war candidate with his top three donors from the military. He just seems like another well-connected good old boy from Texas to me. Which would be fine, but what comes out of his mouth is truly frightening. That's a double whammy IMO.

lets see...banks, media, insurance companies, weapons industry.

whats interesting is that in the top there is UBS...which is a foreign bank.....hmmmmmmmmm

besides....did you see the amounts given to each????...did you look at the history of the banks and the media and see who they give the most too????

also...when it comes to the colleges...no wonder costs are going up so much that the people cant afford it.

have you seen the movie minority report???..

                                goodness man.

“Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens’ lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons.”-Ron Paul

he gets the most from the military becaue they dont want to be in war!!!!!!!

Seriously? Why so? Why make themselves obsolete? What proof have you to make such a claim?

Yes, I fully admit that Obama is a part of the status quo. But he is the sanest and, let's face it, the most pro middle class of the lot. You said Ron Paul was different from the status quo. I'm pointing out he isn't. AND he's a crazy coot to boot! WADR (With All Due Respect) No thanks.

And frankly, until we get money out of our political process, there are no politicians who are exempt from corruption - including Ron Paul.

that is because you are afraid of freedom.

Marshall, Ron Paul does NOT automatically bring freedom with him wherever he goes.

                                His ideas DO NOT WORK.

Ron Paul is part of the status quo???

YES HE IS. My GOD how blind can you be? In what way has Ron Paul materially affected the status quo? Ever?

He's a very noisy little man but that IS ALL HE IS. How come you have such a bizarre reverence for this ancient misfit whose entire life is nothing but a collection of coulda-beens?

He has had 76 years to get his vision in order. He obviously lacks any power or persuasive ability, since his fan base levels out so high and never higher.

obama will win..you will be happy...and all will be well.

Yes. Obama has done more to upset the status quo than any President since FDR.

That is why there is such a concerted right-wing campaign to remove him.

                                lol

obama is just a puppet...he is the messenger of a bigger picture. I could personally care less about the fool...I am looking at a bigger picture.....I would just assume having him in there vs romney...doesnt make a damn bit of difference to me.

this isnt about him...this is about something larger.

and that you just dont get.....keep watching msnbc.....they will give you all the truth you need.

IMO - he has gotten LESS persuasive as the years have gone by. We've just become more tolerant because, let's face it - he's too old to argue with anymore.

Glad somebody else sees this too. But he is well funded by Wall Street. I know he has Masters too.

Just a question to all the Ron Paul lovers/conservatives who are also OWS supporters: why not Buddy Roemer? He seems to fit the bill much better than Paul.

Buddy who? Buddy Roemer? Never heard of him.

I can not see a POTUS named "Buddy". For some reason Paulie Shore's tag lines of "Hey Buddy ...no wheezing the juice" keeps popping into my mind. Not sure if that mean I need more sleep or more caffeine.

@ thisbusymonster #18.1- Doing the right thing and speaking the truth often makes one unpopular with people who would rather live the lie and continue down a familiar but doomed path. Sure, Paul has lost more battles in Congress than he has won, but wars are not determined by a few or many battles, but by those who persevere. Maybe Paul does not stand a chance in winning the Republican nomination, but he has already won the war. Romney will be but a footnote in history, Paul will be making history.

Of course he's gonna win, once Mitt get the nod the media will begin there spin-spin on why he's evil and in league with the New World Order. This guy won't stand a chance against Tinstletown Cronies either, he will be labled as the angry white guy picking on the humble mulatto with the heart of gold if he decides to take the gloves off. Most importantly, Obama will win just like Bush Jr. won, vote for the devil you know.

So we will see more talkshow and Twitter campaigns, more bills brought up that he knows the Republicans will block, he is going to win the same way he won the first time, grandstand and appease to the "I wants and the have nots," promise more freebies here and there and make his case as to why he basically didn't live up to the hype in 2008.

                                      So yeah, he will win.

Romney it the last best hope of the Republican. I think the race will be close and could depend on who is vice presidential choice is. I hope he picks Palin and she works her magic on Mitt they way she worked in on John.
